I got a chance to read PW last week.
Now, keep in mind I was at the National Advocacy Center in a class on interviewing child sex abuse victims, that I have a 15-month old daughter and another on the way soon, and that I can relate to being part of an agency involved in the GWOT, and the book hit me like a friggin' ton of bricks.
To anyone who is a parent, or has ever even seriously *thought* about being a parent, Private Wars carries a significant emotional impact.
I was pretty shocked in the first few, when Tara discovered her "blessed event," and I knew it wasn't done just for the hell of it. Sure enough, that element was an emotional hammer throughout the book - at least for me, because I know EXACTLY what that "Good parent/Good agent" conflict feels like.
I gotta say the ending shocked the hell outta me, too. I have to admit, I was hoping for the best, but... (side note, Greg - you ever *think* about a happy ending? Anything you want to talk about? ;-) )
The other thing that was both timely and powerful was the torture aspect. My experiences with victims of various forms of child abuse is slightly different in context, but it allowed me to appreciate how well the book covered the effects of torture.
Overall, as with all Rucka Books, I was very moved by, and I felt very involved in the book. I could relate to it on a lot of levels, and it made quite an impact on me.
Amazing job...
