Wow, not only can you read them in the shower, or the rain, or while white-water rafting, but you can boo-hoo-hoo all you want during the sad chapters, too....

I like the idea that if you know someone who is compelled to write comments in the margins, you can always Windex them off later.

Melcher Media Receives Patent for Waterproof Books
by Lynn Andriani, Publishers Weekly -- 6/1/2006

Amid all the dialogue about the preferred future format of the book, Melcher Media is forging ahead with a completely different approach to words on paper. The New York book packager and publisher announced last week that it has been issued the patent (no. 6,773,034) for the technology behind a method of producing waterproof books, called DuraBooks. The book jackets and pages are completely waterproof, durable and “upcyclable,” meaning that the synthetic “paper” used in DuraBooks can be melted down and reused in perpetuity.

The “paper” used in the books is tear- and stain-resistant, made from plastic resins and inorganic fillers, with nary a speck of wood pulp or cotton fiber. DuraBooks can withstand water, dirt, grease and humidity—qualities that would appear to lend themselves well to maps; field guides; travel books; children’s books; cookbooks; camping, boating and fishing titles; and books to be read in the tub, on the beach or at the pool.
