If you do decide to delve into Q&C I highly recommend picking up the Graphic novels first. You could certainly jump right in to the first novel, but I think you'll enjoy it a lot more if you've read the comics first.

The first novel comes right after the 7th volume of the comics series. The 8th volume of the comic series technically comes between the 2 novels, but it was published after. I read them in the order they were published but should you choose to you could read the comic first.

The best part about the graphic novels is they are pretty cheap and you can get the books in paperback which will save you some cash.
