: Now...Denise Mina. Which one are you reading, Garnethill???? That one's a huge favorite at my store as are the two following that.  Her stand-alone novel, Deception, was received with a tad less enthusiasm - mostly because, I suspect, it wasn't a series novel and written with another style of novel in mind.  But it's good, she's got talent.

: If you like Rankin, I'd also try Simon Kernick.  His first, The Businesss of Dying, came out in trade paperback a few months ago.  I'm over the moon about his stuff - smart London-based street crime / cops & robbers, with the bad guys often the heroes of the tale.
