Here a couple of authors to try:

Joe R Lansdale - Any of the Hap and Leonard novels
Steve Hamilton - Any of the Alex McKnight novels
Dennis Lehane - Shutter Island (my fave of his)
Ian Rankin - Any of the Rebus books

and sort of off topic, the best book i've read this year was The Ballad of the Whiskey Robber by Julian Rubinstein. Its a true crime book about a bank robber from Translyvania who becomes a Robin Hood like folk hero in post communist hungary. Check it out at Amazon - it was great!
