Too true. But thats certainly also the case with the Atticus novels. Shooting At Midnight would never be as good if you hadn't come to care about the characters over the 3 previous books.....possibly more than any other thiller/mystery writer, Rucka seems to build up such....emotional momentum (for lack of a better term) with his characters. Each novel adding another level of dimension.
For example, someone like Elizabeth George - who I love - her novels don't have the same quality. I like the characters, but rarely do the main characters evolve nor do i find myself as emotionally attached to them.
