You are totally right with that. Even though it did bug me a little, the characters were so original and well developed that I kept reading and wanted to find out what happened to them regardless. There were a few other little things that bugged me along those same lines (like why they didn't use buildings with underground parking and John Doe would leave his energy bar out for for a squirrel to get) but in the end I trust Greg Rucka to tell a good story and so far (both in novels and comics) he has always delivered. I added Shooting at Midnight to my library request list before I even finished Smoker.
